It’s week 3 of the Cartoon Contest and Hurbi is still going strong! Thank you for your support, votes, and positive feedback.
Hurbi, however, is nervous about the level of competition this week… so, he’s trying to get more people to visit http://www.thecartooniststudio.com/Vote and vote for this week’s comic. How will he convince all of the Hurbi fans to vote, vote, vote? He’s going with the old Jedi mind trick.
Visit, register, search for Hurbi and vote away! Share the blog with your friends and get them to vote too. Everything is more fun when your friends are involved!
Remember, you can vote for Hurbi up to 4 times a day. But, even if you can only vote once a day, every little bit helps. Thanks!

Cartoon Contest 2012 – Week 1
Well, Super Bowl Sunday has come and gone. The energy, the anticipation, the
commercials, the thrill of watching your team gut it out to the last moment… Ugh… Welker really should have had that ball.
Now, it’s time for a new competition with the same energy, anticipation, and thrill (okay, maybe not the same, but you get the idea) – the annual Cartoon Contest! When quarterbacks dream, they see themselves launching a Hail Mary down to the end zone for a last-second win. When cartoonists dream… well, maybe we shouldn’t go there. But if you ask a cartoonist what his or her dream is, the answer will be, “to have a syndicated comic strip.” Now, the grand prize in this year’s contest isn’t a guarantee at syndication but it is pretty cool. Here’s the official word on what the winner wins…
The winner will get to run their comic on the GOCOMICS.com website. The winner will be paid from advertising and subscription revenues generated by his/her feature. He or She will also win an electronic book publishing contract from The Cartoonist Studio. This can lead to a development deal if the cartoon strip develops a following.
What a thrill! GOCOMICS.com features some of the greatest
comics like, Calvin and Hobbes, Garfield, and Peanuts. Can’t you just see Hurbi there among those timeless and well-loved characters? Well, I can… I see them hanging out together. I see Snoopy eating bones like potato chips, Garfield stuffing lasagna in his mouth, and Hurbi enjoying a nice creamy moth milkshake. I guess that’s not really the most appetizing image… anyway.
My point is this is the Super Bowl of cartooning! Everyone in this contest has poured blood, sweat, and paper cuts into his/her comic and now it’s time to see who will be the last stripper standing! Huh… better copyright that before NBC uses it as the name of their next reality show.
So, yes, the Super Bowl is over but the greatest annual comic strip competition has just begun! Now, get out there and vote, vote, vote! Preferably for Hurbi because he’s getting ready to throw a Hail Mary!

Almost everything I’ve read about the 2012 Red Sox has been heavily sprinkled with gloom and doom. Sadly, many of the negative predictions have been grounded in very serious reality, especially given their monumental collapse last season. On the other hand, this Red Sox team isn’t substantially different from the team many said would reach the World Series. So, to counteract all of the negativity around Red Sox Nation, here’s an overly-optimistic (if not insane) look at Boston’s boys of summer.
Dustin Pedroia is New Red Sox Captain and All-Star Game MVP
plagued the final months of both 2010 and 2011 and talk of his clubhouse antics aren’t endearing at this point. Youk will have more injury issues this season and the Sox will call on Middlebrooks to fill the gap. With the better part of the summer spent in Triple-A, Middlebrooks will develop into a stronger player that will serve nicely at 3rd base and give the team some extra energy down the stretch.
Transitioning flame-throwing relief pitcher Daniel Bard into a starter will be a tremendous success, early on. Sure, there have been other successful reliever-to-starter stories but those pitchers lose steam near the end of the season. So, why do I say that the Daniel Bard experiment will work? The X-factor… Daisuke Matsuzaka. Dice-K has been out since May 17 of last season and is preparing to come back from Tommy John surgery. As Bard begins to wind down, Matsuzaka will take over as a starter in the rotation and emerge as a late-season juggernaut. With a new pitching coach and a manager who’s actually worked with Japanese players, I’m optimistic that Dice-K will have a comeback year.
In 2006 and 2007, he was batting over .300, had 50 or more stolen bases and had around 90 runs. Compare that with 2008. His batting average was .273 with only 25 stolen bases and 69 runs. Then, look at 2009 and 2010. Batting average over .300, nearly twice as many (or more) stolen bases, and around 100 runs scored. We all know what happened in 2011: Batting average .255; only 18 stolen bases; 65 runs. The good news? He’s due for two more fantastic years! We might want to make a trade before 2014 though…
